"About a Girl" riff borrowed from a Croatian rock band

Post by winston smith » Mon Sep 05, 2011 4:01 pm

yeah, I`ve already mentioned this to KristinNirvana in my introduction...

since you all probably know: "The Novoselic family moved to Aberdeen, Washington in 1979, due to rising property prices in California. In 1980, his parents sent him to live with relatives in Zadar, Croatia, then part of SFR Yugoslavia. There, Novoselic attended the gymnasium. Novoselic was already interested in bands like Led Zeppelin, Devo, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, and Aerosmith. He also enjoyed rock bands like Zabranjeno Pusenje, Prljavo Kazaliste and Azra."

These latter bands are very very famous and influential rock bands in the whole area of Balkans, and, the one which is not mentioned among them, called Parni Valjak... this is probably more than coincidence, but I believe that nirvana, probably under krist`s influence, took the beginning and chorus riff from Valjak`s song "Hrast" for their classic song "About a Girl"... here`s my proof:

coincidence or not? btw, this song was recorded in late 70s :wink2:

p.s. the city of Zadar is like 3-hour-drive from my hometown, so, I guess that`s a kind of a compliment

sounds a lot like it.. but.. you can say the same for about a million bands

Just..uhmm.. Kurt wrote that song on his own, probably heard the song, and sub-consciously copied it.
I remember a few months ago, i made the best riff in the world.. turned out to be 'rape me'

well, I guess that the whole band had a word when creating the songs, maybe Krist heard this in Croatia, and then just gave the chord progression idea to Kurt, who then created the whole song, that seems pretty logical  that song was recorded in 1979, and Krist came to Croatia in 1980, when that band, as well as the song, were pretty popular on radio, TV and stuff

haha I guess they knew the song, the opening could be a coincidence, but the bridge/chorus part also sounds alike. Does anyone know this band Jonas - same riff, great song

I just wanted to say, there is no progression that hasn't been played before. Once your subconcience grabs the hook of a song (even if you dont like the song) and stores it away, you might never remember where it came from, at least not until you get the subpena.

Yeah, the "About a girl" main riff uses two chords, one of them 4 semitones away from the other. It's pretty common! :o
when the whole thing comes crashing down, don't ask me why, don't ask me why

yeah is Em and G, I dunno about you guys but these are the two chords I strum when ever I pick up a guitar to check the tuning and what not. This was the first riff that I learned to play by ear, on accident, doing just that actually. Bouncing around between root and 3rd is a pretty common rhythm technique in rock music.
