Grunge is more than a type of music its a lifestyle, its a dont give a fuck attitude. The music side is what youd call alternative rock. Its a cross between punk and 80's rock/metal, a cross between medolic and heavy music. grunge bands include nirvana, pearl jam, mudhoney, soundgarden, alice in chains, green river, smashing pumpkins, hole, pixies, screaming trees, tripping daisy, janes addiction, bush, silverchair, l7, veruca salt, tad, sonic youth, stone temple pilots, temple of the dog, blind melon, helmet.
These are bands that are definatly not grunge but are sometimes concieved so: slipknot, the vines, foo fighters, sex pistols, black sabbath.

well grunge rock apparently has many definitions. Everybody seems to have somewhat of a different idea on what grunge rock means, but still for the most part the same idea. So some of the bands we disagree on as being grunge and all that, but we still agree on a lot of the main ones.

I myself think that grunge is pretty specific to the Pacific Northwest and the bands associated with the Pacific Northwest in the eighties and early nineties. It seemed to me like anything that came out of the Pacific Northwest somehow got the grunge label (for the most part).

So I don't consider Sonic Youth a grunge band and not really the Stone Temple Pilots.

However, I realize that there are a bunch of different definitions for grunge rock, so sometimes I pretty much consider anything that can fit in one of the definitions as grunge rock.

Its too confusing for me, but I don't care much. I pretty much like all of the bands that are listed here, so I don't know. :D

There is no "don't give a fuck" attitude. There was a consciousness to it, and a definate "give a fuck" attitude. Lots of benefits and ideals and integrity.

Your idea of grunge is messed up. There is definatly a "dont give a fuck" attitude to a lot of things. Hence the poor hygiene of many grungers.

I think its a revolt against mainstreem and corperate stuff....uknow...Like purpousfully being messy and different...not wanting to conform to society, just because its rubbish...and theres more to life than succeeding financially - so they tried to be the total opposite. Like so many kids wanted to do, so the grunge rebellion was formed...but the original "G" has been changed and manipulated to label anyone with distorted guitars and dirty growly voices....ukno? But anyway..what i think is that it was more to do with hating most of the western world lolol
