Help my 70s music education, please :D

Talk about non grunge music and music in general in here. Don't be shy, we don't bite.

Help my 70s music education, please :D

Post by Mystic »

I've always liked rock music. I used to be a lousy metal-head, then I switched to emo/hardcore music, then grunge and now old music (70s, 60s). Nobody ever showed me any of this 'old music', all my peers listen to whatever is popular at the moment. I feel like a kid left behind, a kid who can't even name a Rolling Stones song and so on. So I looked up some stuff and found some pretty awesome music but the more I find it, the more I realize I know nothing about old music.

So I'm gonna name artists I already know and I'd be very happy if anyone knows a few alike to add, or perhaps the 'must-knows' from 20th century.

What I like best is hippie music with good vocals, perhaps a little rock n roll and a little jazz.

Examples of music I like:

Jefferson Airplane - Somebody to love http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Jj3wZVc7nw

Jimi Hendrix - Manic depression http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjP81zL_RXA

Deep Purple - Strange kind of woman http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAzjVdD06z8

Ok so Artists I already know:
Bob Dylan
Pink Floyd
the Doors
Janis Joplin
Jefferson Airplane
Jimi Hendrix
Deep Purple
Black Sabbath
Led Zeppelin
Lou Reed
David Bowie
Iggy Pop
the Stooges
Velvet Underground
Television
Talking Heads
Patti Smith
Bob Marley
the Beatles
Joy Division
Eric Clapton

Lynyrd Skynyrd
Manu Chao
Sex Pistols
Santana
...

Thanks for help! I really feel like I'm missing the obvious ones...

Here’s the stuff that I’ve come up with by scrolling through my iTunes but there really is FAR more than this. The late 60’s- early 70’s was such a prolific time for rock music, each week there were dozens of albums released that are now considered classics – a fantastic time to have lived. There really is so much stuff to get through, the sooner you get stuck in the better in my opinion.
