I am aware of this. But a friend of mine from Rosario learned Portuguese in under two weeks - fluently. She found it incredibly easy.

Portuguese, italian, spanish and french all come from latin, so they have a lot of things in common , which gives anyone who speaks any of those languages as mother tongue a little ease to learn the others (Although french is a little more difficult for anyone who speaks one of the other three... So many apostrophes and everything sounds like you've catched a cold... )
