How is it Flop never went mainstream?

Just wondering really. Every time I listen to a track by Flop I think “Man, these guys should have been huge” and I know a lot of people who like Flop share that opinion. I mean, Whenever You’re Ready sounds like it could have ranked right up there as one of the most defining albums of alternative music. Rusty Willoughby is doubtless a rock music genius. But they never really got anywhere, being quite obscure in the US and more or less totally unheard of in the UK (where I live).

What happened to stop these guys becoming mainstream? Your thoughts are appreciated.

Well they could have broken big in the wake of the punk revival but had too much of an indie sensitivity going on maybe..? I don't know either, World Of Today is a fantastic album but maybe they just didn't fit the grunge mold enough to really break through.

there are a million ways for bands not to make it big. Poor management, no management, poor business skills, schedules that don't let them take advantage of opportunities if there are any, bad with money, don't enjoy travelling, don't like being ripped off..... its endless really.

Personally, I think the lead single from Whenever You’re Ready ‘Regrets’ just wasn’t good enough for the band to break big.
If something like ‘A Wylie’ or ‘Julie Francavilla’ has been the lead single, major success would have been way more likely IMO.
