Is grunge really a genre?

The descriptor “grunge” I bestow unto rock music that ...
> is too heavy/dark/slow to be punk
> is too minimalist to be metal
> is embellished by melancholia
... this has Nirvana, Alice in Chains, and early Soundgarden at least down to a tee.. but the next steps are those of the critics... I entrust them with the duty of dishing out this adjectival-noun ...
