So I've got a problem

Post by Echoandtherabbit »

I've recently started a band. All good and fun :)

But I'm afraid we sound too much like another band.

All of us are heavily inspired by Tool (amongst other bands, but Tool is the band we all share in common) so naturally we make songs that sound like them.

I'm just afraid we sound TOO much like them.

idk...

Understand that being yourself is more important than being different, and as long as you aren't plagiarizing or trying to sound like them for the sake of sounding like them, you should accept who you are even if it happens to be like someone else.

get either the guitar or bass player to use an effect that tool doesnt ever use....something that sounds best when others alter the style they play.

Considering Tool is the band you're worried you sound too much like, this is actually a very easily solved problem, since Tool does such "out there" stuff with their music in terms of time signatures, song structure, etc. while keeping the tone and color of their music so even and simple. You can do a lot just by using OTHER time signatures and song structures. Here are some more tips if you want more advanced Tool-separation:

1. Don't sing like Maynard James Keenan. I know it's really easy to sing like him, but just stop. He sounds like a whiny girl most of the time anyway--and he's a pro, so just imagine how you sound.

2. Add different colors. Tool works almost entirely in the blue/gray/purple color range, so just add some bright tones, maybe a bluesy fill or a funky solo, and you're already miles away.

3. Try addressing very different lyrical themes from Tool. That's not hard either, since Tool's lyrical themes are all very clustered together (deep, philosophical, angry at "the system", etc.). Write a pro-war song. Write a song praising some beautiful aspect of American heritage. Write a song about a great athlete. Write a song about how doing drugs past the age of 22 is pretty lame. Hell, that'll differentiate you from most of rock, not just Tool!

Also, try turning up the midrange on your EQs.

Lol. Im guessing you dont like tool.

1. I don't sing like Maynard. Although I think he's good as hell but to each their own :aP

2. I'll def try doing that, thanks. Also to cancuker, I'm gonna add effects they never used.

3.I write about what I want.

It's more about sounding musically similar, not lyrically, but I guess that was a just in case type thing. Thanks man :)

I actually do like Tool--when they come on the radio or something. They're sorta like RATM for me in that respect. I guess you could say I like Tool, but I don't "buy in" to Tool. Or, I like Tool but I'm not a Tool fan.

The midrange EQ-tip is unique though, gotta give you that!

Now mixing Dylan's lyrics with Tool's sound wouldn't be too bad right?

I had a friend who was the lead vocalist/guitarist for a grunge band back in 2001/2. He's a shortish blond guy with long dirty looking hair, blue eyes and he sang with an american accent. Was constantly accused of copying Kurt Cobain.

Eventualy all he did was wear a hat on stage. No more critics. He's music stayed the same and some people even liked it.

I would'nt be to worried about sounding like TOOL. Most of today's rock listeners forgot who Tool is. And besides, Tool is good music. Are you really affraid of of sounding like good music?

Just be yourself, don't analyze too much, and Rock the f out.
The moment you start analyzing your own rock is the moment your rock is dead. That's why rock is now pretty much dead. Too much analyzation. No rockalyzation! - Jack Black
