I need help getting into Nirvana.

Hey everybody, I've always had respect for Nirvana as a band, but I could never get into them myself. I think the reason why is that when I look for bands, I tend to focus on bands where the vocals are very emotional (I think Tool is a good example of this, if that makes sense). I know how hard Kurt Cobain worked on his voice to get it the way he wanted, but to me I don't hear a lot of emotion behind his voice. To me, most of the time it sounds like he's just drugged out and doesn't care. One example of this is there song, "Breed." That song hurts to watch, because you can tell he's on drugs and you can tell he's destroying his voice. You can practically see him burning himself out and it makes me want to run up on stage and make him stop doing that to himself.

Well recently I was listening to some nirvana songs and came across "You Know You're Right." I really loved it because you could practically hear how angry and broken he was at that point. The difference between those two songs I think is that he is fully aware of what he's feeling and saying in "You Know Your'e Right," where in the song, "Breed," I don't think he even knew what was happening. My question is, are there anymore Nirvana songs that have a similar amount of emotion in the vocals? Again, I don't think that Nirvana in anyway is a bad band, it's just that the vocals most of the time are missing something for me. Thank you everybody!

That's a bit confusing since he kind of was pigeonholed as having emotional/passionate vocals. Hence how intense "A denial" sounds when he sings it over and over again in Smells Like Teen Spirit, and same with "Rape Me" etc.

I think Unplugged is the most emotional he went (or where it's the easiest to hear), so maybe that's the place to start? But for me, every album is very emotional, in different ways. My favorite is In Utero, hands down. But I think the more you listen, the more you pick up the differences in his voice. Have you gone through the whole discography?

Also, if you start from the early demos and work your way through, you can hear his voice developing.

My theory is you are projecting what you know about Kurt from media instead of listening to what is actually coming out.

I agree... it's the legend thing now. No one really thought about it while he was alive. Not even his band mates.
