"Something in the Way" I could have just won the World Series and the Super Bowl at the same time and if that song came on the buzz would be gone....man

Surprised nobody's mentioned "Dumb" yet. That came to mind as soon as saw the thread title. It's from the perspective of a guy who not only has to put on a mask to the world; he can't even be honest with himself. And those melancholy strings certainly emphasize the bleakness of the entire song.

I find Dumb more wistful than depressing to be honest. I fucking love Dumb by the way.

when the final notes of all apologies, you know you're right, and where did you sleep last night? end, i always get chills and an overwhelming reality check of sadness.

Sappy, definitely imo. This version in particular. Gives me chills every time and yet that warm, snuggly, dark, under-the-blankey kinda feeling if that makes any sense.. lol

I hate myself and want to die, Kurt said people would take it wrong but personally, I think he really did feel that way at the time of recording.

The lyrics of 'I Hate Myself And Want To Die', as you'll probably have gathered, have nothing themselves to do with hating oneself or wanting to die.

‘All Apologies’, ‘Something In The Way’ and ‘Pennyroyal Tea’ are all candidates.
Songs like ‘Polly’, ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ and ‘Rape Me’ are more lyrically dark than they are depressing.

I should note in addition to my post above, that the B-side ‘Marigold’ also has a depressing feel to it. Dave Grohl says that he knew Kurt would commit suicide all along, and that seems to be what ‘Marigold’ is about.
Whenever Dave played ‘Marigold’ with the Foo Fighters, however, he seemed to make it much poppier.
