Saddest/Most Depressing Nirvana song?

Post by UnitShifter » Sat Feb 09, 2013 8:10 pm

I'd say it's a tossup between Something in the Way and All Apologies. I'd probably have to go with All Apologies though, since it was basically Kurt's suicide song.

You Know You're Right. I was actually just thinking recently that it kind of sounds like a post-grunge song, because it sounds a lot darker than their other stuff.

Kurt depresses me more when he's sort of whimsy about the whole "I don't want to live to 27" thing. Like how Old Age has always depressed me, same way 24 by Red House Painters does. Or Sappy, now talk about dependence, wasting your life. Moist Vagina is pretty depressing, too. It just feels strikingly empty.
Nirvana wrote some pretty sad music. I wonder what Cobain thought of the slowcore/shoegaze music of his time, like Codeine, Red House Painters, Slowdive, Should, Low. I'd really love to hear his take on that sound, maybe his album with Stipe was going to be like that? I've heard that it was going to be heavy on strings, ambient guitars, acoustic guitars, less sarcastic lyrics. Would have been amazing.
Too.
Fucking.
Bad.

Does "Don't Want It All" count for this question?

I'd more likely say Moist Vagina is more scary than sad, but yes, it is very desolate and empty sounding.

I don't really find any Nirvana song sad or depressing but Something in the Way is definitely a very emotional one, when I first heard that it felt a bit like this Family Guy scene

In general though I always feel pumped up when listening to Nirvana, I suppose you could feel a bit sad if you really listened to some of Kurts lyrics (even though most have no real meaning) but for me the anger is what comes through the most and it's fucking beautiful

That is the thing about Nirvana, a lot of people say they ended "fun" rock but I don't find any of their songs depressing. Maybe once they hit In Utero there were a few references to suicide but overall they were a lot of fun!

I agree. Heck the Smells Like Teen Spirit video was basically just a bunch of kids dancing.

For some reason, Sappy. I'm not sure why, the lyrics are basically about turtles :P but it's presented in a depressing way.
Anyway like what Dan's at, when I imagine Nirvana the picture that comes up is on a group of smiling goofballs, not dark, moody people.
when the whole thing comes crashing down, don't ask me why, don't ask me why

That song makes me sad. I always interpreted "You're in a laundry room" as "We're all in a fucking depressing place and we try to ignore it". But that's just me I guess. Also, I had a turtle when I was little. She died. :c
