U-Men were grunge, too. But the term didn't really come out then, so I'd say Green River are indeed the fathers, especially since members of MLB, Pearl Jam, and Mudhoney were in it.

I heard someone say somewhere that Neil Young was the ‘father of grunge’. Don’t get that particularly. He reminds me more of ‘80s alt.
