sy is really not grunge

Kim Gordon & Thurston Moore have been kicking it hard for over 20 years and they can still put on a mean show. Talk about these New York gods here!

Sonic Youth were inspired sh*tloads by the New York No Wave movement (a scene reacting to the pop of 80's new wave). SY in turn was sucked Into Grunge & influenced it bigtime. SY aren't Grunge tho. x

Lol... Okay well, to be specific :P ......they got sucked into Nirvana 8)

Along with the Pixies

Once you've heard a SY album + Pixies' Doolittle, you can see the influence straight away, it's pretty heavy. Especially on Bleach, Incesticide & their B-sides

Tis cool! x

I don't think Blind Melon are Grunge. But sound-wise, they are as much as Mother Love Bone is, I guess.

Pixies n SY arent Grunge. If we start to be too inclusive, the term loses all meaning. Pixies came out of the American 80s Indie scene..... while SY came out of NY's No Wave scene (a reaction to the commerialism of 80s Synth Pop).

Simply, they don't sound Grungy. So I think, leave em out. x

ppfffft dont sound grungy? who the hell have you been listening to? I was basing this how to define a grunge band on what debs and adam were saying. They said if a band had a grunge feel they were grunge... they said Blind Melon were grunge because they had that feel......

Well what the fuck is Grunge meant to sound like?

How can we put Nirvana in the same boat as Temple Of The Dog?
Do they sound anything like each other? No.

There are more Rock bands that sound closer to TOTD than Nirvana do.

And no, Nirvana isn't an exception. Punky style Grunge also covers half of GreenRiver's material, Mudhoney, Some Velvet Sidewalk, The Cows & a bunch of others. These all have really sludgy Grungy sounds. Every other Grunge band sounds so 'crisp' & un-distorted, that the term Grunge no longer makes sense.

So do Blind Melon feel Grungy? Well if ya wanna compare them to TOTD or Mother Love Bone, then yes. But essentially these bands are Rock, not Grunge. I would consider Nirvana or Alice In Chains a Grunge band... & Blind Melon sound nothing like em. I would call Soundgarden & Pearl Jam rock bands also, but in some third catergory. It's like how many bands can you lump together that sound totally different from each other?????
It becomes silly. Sonic Youth, now which Grunge band to they sound like?Pixies... gimme another Grunge band that sounds remotely like them!

Blind Melon are Amazing! But they aren't Grunge in my opinion. They're guitarwork is far too crisp & un-distorted to be Grunge. I think we all just like the Grunge banner n think it's cool... I mean I think that, but in truth...... there's about 3/4 sub-genres under Grunge..... & that's kinda silly. x

Lol, k

I've changed my mind :P

I just put Blind Melon on & they sound Grungy in some songs... but in others, not at all.....not at all sludgy like Mudhoney... but there's a definate style of bassline that runs throughout Grunge, that is very Pixies - Influenced . So they are definately on the border.

Pixies n SY are still not Grunge tho :P x

Hmmm

Okay, I agree that Grunge is has no distinct sound, definately. It's so diverse 8)

But I'm not sure what you mean about the feeling in it?

Like Holyroller, Them Bones & Smells Like Teen Spirit, for example, have very different feels x

Lolly :P

Okay I sorta see what you're saying,
For me, Mother Love Bone doesn't seem to have much feeling in it,
with exception to Man Of Golden Words 8)
They are all kickass songs for sure & the vocals are amazing! - It takes effort to sing like that, but still, I think the monotone-ness of the melodies they choose to sing, takes away the passion, I feel.
Or maybe I just prefer Cornell to Andrew? x

..honestly? Sir, that was posted in frikkin' 2004. And your post doesn't even make sense, as the one you quoted is also saying Sonic Youth isnt Grunge.
Doesn't the title "SY is really not grunge" tell you anything?
