While it may not be on an actual cassette, Sonic Youth's new mixtape is pretty close to that once-ubiquitous art form.

The band has released a digital mix, "Sonic Youth Mixtape Vol. 8," that features a handpicked selection of 11 demos, unreleased tracks and more. Fans can stream the mixtape free on the band's site, navigating the songs using a nifty design that looks like a traditional cassette tape but offers the benefit of not having to wait for the reels to spin.

The new offering is fitting from the band, whose frontman Thurston Moore wrote the book called "Mix Tape: The Art of Cassette Culture."

The compilation includes songs from the band's new soundtrack to French film "Lights Out' (aka (Simon Werner a Dsiparu ...), as well as "Daydream Nation" demos and a new acoustic recording of "Star Power."

"We've been going thru our closets and and thru hidden (and sometimes forgotten) boxes to put together this streaming Mixtape #8," the band wrote on its website.
