Any good band can go mainstream if they are good enough.

Look at The Black Keys, Mumford & Sons and Alabama Shakes.

The last decent Grunge band was Mad Season, and it was a supergroup.

They started as a Post-Grunge band and now they are closer to Arena/Hard Rock.
